Welcome back to our STEAM Series. So far, we’ve explored what STEAM is, why it begins with questions rather than answers, what makes a learning experience meaningful, and how transversal skills often develop naturally within authentic challenges. But before we begin exploring the classroom activities themselves, there is one final question that deserves our attention.
Can teachers realistically develop transversal skills without sacrificing the curriculum?
For many educators, this isn’t simply a theoretical question—it’s a daily reality. Every school year comes with curriculum requirements, assessment expectations and limited teaching time. When new educational priorities emerge, it is understandable that teachers wonder where they are supposed to fit them in.
Perhaps the difficulty begins with the way the question is framed.
It assumes that academic learning and skill development are two separate goals competing for the same time.
In reality, some of the richest learning experiences achieve both at once.
Imagine a class investigating why one bridge design can hold more weight than another. Children are exploring scientific concepts, applying mathematical thinking, testing ideas and communicating their observations. At the very same time, they are negotiating different viewpoints, adapting their plans when something doesn’t work, managing frustration, listening to one another and celebrating shared successes. The curriculum has not been paused while skills are developed. Both are unfolding together.
That is one of the greatest strengths of meaningful STEAM learning.
Rather than asking teachers to add something extra, it invites them to teach familiar curriculum content through experiences that naturally engage children as thinkers, collaborators and problem-solvers. Knowledge gives the activity its substance. The transversal skills give it life. Together, they create learning that is not only academically rigorous but also deeply human.
Of course, this does not mean that every lesson needs to become a STEAM project. Nor does it suggest that every objective can or should be taught through interdisciplinary activities. Good teaching has always involved choosing the right approach for the right purpose.
What STEAM offers is another possibility.
It reminds us that some of the most valuable learning happens when children are invited to connect ideas, investigate authentic questions and apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts. When that happens, curriculum objectives are not left behind. If anything, they become more memorable because children have experienced them rather than simply studied them.
As we begin exploring the SPIRIT STEAM activities in the articles ahead, I hope you’ll look beyond the finished products or the materials being used. Instead, notice how each activity creates opportunities for knowledge, skills and personal growth to develop together. Because perhaps the most meaningful classrooms are not the ones where teachers choose between preparing children for school or preparing them for life.
Perhaps they quietly do both.
