First Look: Building Stronger Ideas – The Spaghetti and Marshmallow Pyramid Challenge
A team proudly places the final marshmallow on top of their spaghetti pyramid.
For a brief moment, it stands.
Then, slowly, one side begins to lean.
A spaghetti stick snaps.
The structure collapses.
The children stare at it in silence.
Then someone smiles and says,
“Let’s try again.”
That moment is the real beginning of the lesson.
Using only spaghetti and marshmallows, children are challenged to build a stable rectangular pyramid while working with limited materials. Before building, they carefully observe a model, identify its geometric features and plan their approach together. As the activity unfolds, geometry stops being something found only in textbooks and becomes something children can see, build and test with their own hands. Points, edges, angles and base shapes suddenly have purpose because they help solve a real design challenge.
Like real engineers, children quickly discover that their first design is rarely their best. Some structures wobble, others collapse completely. Instead of seeing these moments as failures, they become valuable information. Teams pause, exchange ideas with one another, make one thoughtful improvement and test their design again. Through this simple cycle of planning, building, testing and improving, children experience problem-solving, critical thinking, flexibility and resilience in an authentic way.
The lesson also introduces an important idea that extends beyond engineering: working responsibly with limited resources. Each team receives only a fixed number of materials, encouraging children to think carefully before building, reuse broken pieces whenever possible and recognise that good design is not only about creating strong structures, but also about avoiding unnecessary waste.
Throughout the investigation, the teacher helps transform construction into learning through thoughtful questions. “What is the smallest change you could test next?”, “What did your first attempt teach you?” and “How did feedback improve your second design?” encourage children to see each attempt not as success or failure, but as another step in understanding the problem more deeply.
Perhaps that is the greatest lesson this challenge offers.
Strong structures are rarely built in a single attempt. Neither are strong ideas.
Sometimes the most important thing children build isn’t the pyramid standing on the table. It’s the confidence to look at something that didn’t work… and begin again.
