Ask a group of children what they know about bubbles, and you’ll probably hear words like fun, play and summer.
Ask them a few weeks later, after completing this STEAM project, and their answers may sound very different.
They might talk about variables, evidence, fair testing and improving a design.
But they might also tell you something even more important.
They made science bring joy to someone else.
That is what makes this project so memorable.
At first, children become young scientists. They investigate why some bubbles last longer than others, compare different recipes, design and build bubble wands, and carry out fair tests by changing one variable at a time. They collect evidence, identify patterns and use their findings to improve both their bubble solution and their designs. In doing so, they experience the scientific method not as something to memorise, but as something they actively use.
But the project doesn’t end when the investigation is complete.
Instead, everything the children have discovered leads towards one shared goal: organising and hosting a community bubble event for their school. Suddenly, the question is no longer simply, “Which bubble recipe works best?” It becomes, “How can we use what we’ve learned to create a joyful, safe and meaningful experience for others?”
That shift changes everything.
Children are no longer working only for themselves or for a grade. They are designing for a real audience. They begin thinking about safety, sustainability, teamwork and the needs of younger children and visitors. Scientific knowledge becomes something they share rather than something they keep to themselves.
Throughout the project, the teacher helps make this learning visible through thoughtful questions. “What does your evidence suggest?” encourages critical thinking. “What stayed the same to keep the test fair?” strengthens scientific reasoning. Later, questions such as “Who is your audience, and what do they need?” help children recognise that good design always considers the people it serves.
Perhaps that is the greatest lesson this project offers.
Science is not only about understanding how the world works.
It is also about using that understanding to make a positive difference.
Sometimes the most meaningful experiment isn’t the one that produces the biggest bubble.
It’s the one that helps children discover that knowledge becomes most powerful when it is shared.
