A group of children gathers around a small plastic capsule.
“What do you think will happen?” the teacher asks.
Some predict a tiny pop.
Others are convinced it will explode high into the air.
The capsule is sealed, gently shaken and placed inside a safety tray.
Everyone waits.
Pop!
The room fills with laughter, excitement and surprise.
But once the excitement settles, a different kind of question emerges.
Why did it happen?
That simple moment is what makes this STEAM activity so powerful.
On the surface, children are investigating a scientific reaction. Working in small groups, they choose how much baking soda to place inside a Kinder Egg capsule while the teacher carefully controls the amount of water. By changing only one variable, children make predictions, observe the outcome, compare results and begin to understand one of the most important ideas in science: changing one input can change the outcome.
Yet the lesson doesn’t stop with science.
The Kinder Egg capsule becomes a simple metaphor for something every child experiences.
Just as different ingredients create different reactions inside the capsule, the things we experience every day—our sleep, food, actions and especially the words we hear from others—can create reactions inside us too. Kind words can help someone feel calm, encouraged or safe. Unkind words can have the opposite effect.
This is where STEAM becomes more than an investigation.
It becomes an opportunity to connect scientific thinking with emotional understanding.
Throughout the lesson, children are encouraged to think like young scientists. They make predictions, test ideas, compare evidence and suggest what they would change next time. At the same time, they are invited to notice their own emotions—perhaps excitement before the pop, surprise during the reaction or curiosity afterwards—and to reflect on how their own actions can become positive “inputs” in someone else’s day.
The teacher plays an important role in helping children make these connections visible. Questions such as “What did you notice first?”, “Was the result what you expected?” and later “What kind input can you give someone today?” encourage children to transfer what they discovered during the investigation into their everyday relationships.
Perhaps that is what I appreciate most about this activity.
Children leave remembering the excitement of the pop.
But they also leave with something much more lasting:
the understanding that small things can create powerful reactions.
